This is an outstanding book.

This is an outstanding book on leadership.I first read it back in 89 and have re-read it twice since. It cuts through all the b.s. of today's trendy leadership books you see in the business management sections in the book stores. Cohen's teachings have stayed with me since that first reading and I believe this is a book that one should refer back to from time to time. Having served in the military, I can relate to his combat model of leadership. I've seen good leadership and bad. The leaders who possessed the traits that Cohen describes in his book were the good ones-hard but fair. I hope Cohen writes a follow-up.

Disappointing

This book promises a lot but delivers little. What is important and useful is usually sandwiched between too many examples, as if you have to be hit over the head to understand that teamwork is important or that expertise is desireable. Also, some of the examples Cohen uses to convince us are a stretch (he twice refers us to episodes of "Baa Baa Black Sheep") and the vast majority of them are based on leaders from the military, which becomes tiresome. Overall, there is not much useful information in this book and there is definitely nothing new.

If you don't already know what's in this book... Go to sleep and get up on the other side of the bed! I mean really. What possible lessons can be learned from advice such as "You have to be recognized." I'm hoping the author does a better job as the new Secretary of Defense than he did as a book writer

There is so much packed within these pages and, without doubt, it's one of those memorable novels that will stand to repeated readings over the passing of time. A book of the year for me, for sure. For Winter's Nights Personally, I found it deeply fascinating...The closest reference point for me was Philip K. Dick's VALIS trilogy which fits in the same general literary area but "The Thing Itself" is definitely much more fun. Yet the earlier rivalry continued: Henry Fielding held the line against idealism, defending the comic tradition with its flawed characters, while Charlotte Brontë and George Eliot offered a rejoinder to social realism with their idealized vision of strong, generous, and sensitive women. In the twentieth century, modernists like Proust and Joyce sought to move beyond this conflict and capture the enigmatic workings of the psyche.

Pavel concludes his compelling account by showing how the old tensions persist even within today's pluralism, as popular novels about heroes coexist with a wealth of other kinds of works, from satire to social and psychological realism.

A history of the novel that's more than a history of the novel.

I found this book to be a fascinating history of the novel. Describing it with the word "history" needs some qualification, however, because it isn't simply a catalog of notable books, laid out in the chronological order of their publication. As author Thomas Pavel says in his Introduction, "Rather than providing a complete inventory of authors and titles, this book aims to describe the major types of novel and the forces that have shaped their history."

This focus on "the major types of novel" is what makes this book uniquely interesting. There have been many such types, with different ones being dominant at different times in history: the chivalric romance, the picaresque, the satire, the gothic novel, and many more. Generally speaking, early novels were largely concerned with promoting ideals of human behavior, either by portraying characters of exemplary perfection, or with characters whose flaws and failings were lampooned. One of the general trends running through the history of the novel is a movement away from these ideal-promoting novels and towards those that observed characters and the world with greater realism and attention to the details of life. But Pavel doesn't try to impose any single theory or "illuminating concept" on the history of the novel. Rather he portrays that history as multi-threaded, with many different themes and approaches to story-telling rising and falling throughout history, perhaps becoming dominant at various times and places, but with many different types of novel often existing at the same point in time. To quote one representative passage from the book, in which he notes that the novel seemed to have arrived at a kind of "maturity" late in the 19th century:

"At the end of the nineteenth century, the novel appeared to have reached full maturity. In its various forms, it could portray complex human beings whose development and actions did not merely illustrate a preestablished set of norms and values. Writers knew how to connect these characters, their thoughts, and their deeds to a plausible social and historical environment. They reflected on the various ways in which love and couple formation succeeds or fails. And most of them used clear, comprehensible language, meant to reach a large group of educated readers. These achievements -- social realism, complex characters, nuanced reflections on love, and accessibility -- were in no danger of forcing writers into a uniform mold. Victor Hugo, Alessandro Manzoni, Dickens, and the popular novelists defended an idealized view of humanity, while Stendhal, Thackeray, and Anthony Trollope ironically exposed human imperfection. The moral optimism of George Eliot and Tolstoy, Flaubert's mixture of contempt and indulgence, the Goncourts' and Zola's dismal view of human nature, Dostoevsky's rejection of autonomy, Fontane's serenity, Thomas Hardy's earnestness, the enlightened despair of Eca de Queiros, Benito Perez Galdos, and Boleslaw Prus -- they were all flourishing within the same literary framework."

In presenting this complex history of the ebb and flow of novelistic themes, Pavel discusses a selection of influential books and authors at the various stages in that history. Many of these discussions are detailed and insightful, and stand as excellent examples of literary criticism in their own right. Throughout the book, Pavel's writing is clear, engaging, and refreshingly free of obscure academic jargon or esoteric theorizing.

This will be an engrossing and even essential book for anyone interested in the history of the novel. But it should also be read by those who never considered themselves interested in that history. The novel, of course, is not merely a form of entertainment. It is through the novel that human beings have applied some of their deepest thought into how people think and feel and behave, how the individual relates to society at large, into love and all the other high and low emotions, into what it means to be alive and human. The history of the novel, especially when approached as Thomas Pavel has in this book, is a history of human thought about humanity.

Great Book!

This textbook worked very well for class. There were no pages missing and it helped me to a good grade. I recommend this textbook to anyone taking this course, or just looking to learn more.

Does the job

I purchased this as a required textbook for a Strategic Marketing course. In that regards it's perfect in that I have assigned readings from it, each week. It is not at all inspiring, dry in places, and some of the examples could be updated. For instance, their example regarding Apple is a great description of the company's brand associations and positioning of 10 years ago (the book still refers to them as Apple Computer) and makes no mention of any of the brand development that firm has undergone since. That said, it get's the concepts across, but I think if it hadn't been written a as a college textbook (in accocordance with a textbook publisher's business model) the information could have been transferred more effectively and inspiringly - in probably half to two thirds of the pages. I think the idea is if it weighs more, it must be worth more.

As I said, it does the job. The writing is easy to understand. I'm learning things from it. I will not be keeping it past the end of semester.

Through Amazon, I purchased it for half the price it was selling for at the University Co-op.

Q. What do you do on a daily basis?
A. As a business owner/designer, my day is equal parts reflection, creativity, and always embracing the moment. It starts with maintaining our mission to strengthen the connection between a child and a parent through smart design. I put the strategy of the business first in order to design my line. It's imperative to decide on your point-of-view and commit to that in all that you do. For belle&beanzer, it's about integrity, intention, and inspiration--from aesthetic and function, to fabric and factories I choose for production, from boutiques who ask to carry our line, to the interaction with my customers.

Q. What was your greatest challenge when launching your collection?
A. There are two great challenges to any business venture, what you know and what you believe. You bring with you a certain number of skills and knowledge, and the rest you need to learn and/or build relationships with those who have what you're missing. For belle&beanzer, in addition to the aesthetic choices we made, our garments are designed to strengthen the connection between parent and child through smart design. The intention and technical design of our garments had to be just right, and we needed a key design team in place to help us deliver that to our families and caregivers. What you believe will be tested again and again, and it all comes back to your vision, mission, and values. We were offered quick fixes, cheaper alternatives, and watered down versions of our line. However, belle&beanzer values integrity, intention and inspiration in all that we do. Ultimately, keeping that in the forefront of our mind made our choices clear.

Q. What are your main responsibilities as a fashion design intern?
A. At Ann Taylor, my primary responsibility is assisting the sportswear team. It involves everything from organizing the sample closet to preparing tech packs. On some days, I spend hours exploring the trim closets to look for certain buttons and hook and eyes.

Q. What is the most challenging aspect of being an intern?
A. The most challenging aspect of being an intern is the relatively short duration of it. Once I was familiar with my team and the organization that I had worked for, the internship was close to ending.

Q. What advice would you give someone beginning an internship?
A. Open your eyes and absorb as much as you can. Most of the time, the tasks can feel menial, but there is always something to learn.

If only this book was published when I was going into college!

Becoming a Fashion Designer is an awesome book to buy for your daughter, son, niece, nephew, or godchild who is into fashion and a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school. It talks about the ins and outs of the fashion business along with a quiz to see if they are really interested in all the aspects of the industry.

I can also see this book being a great tool for first year fashion institute educators. If your students aren't interested in this book, they probably have no place taking any kind of fashion course!

As someone who has graduated fashion college, it was still a delightful read. I enjoyed the articles with well known fashion designers and other people in the industry. I enjoyed it immensely, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more as a teen, just getting a glimpse inside the world of fashion. I remember when it was all new to me - this book brought back all the new giddiness of that time in my life.

From what I have seen the fashion industry is just competitive as any other field out there. In order to succeed you must not only have the drive and determination but the knowledge to make the right decisions and know what steps will work out the best. Probably the definitive book for those thinking about a career in fashion

This book is the antidote to the more common projections of glamour associated with work in the fashion industry. Actually, I think there's more glamour than in most professions. Yet the expectations set by culture are far from the reality.

To me this book was designed with an ideal format for covering a career in a field. There are textbook like sections that don't feel like a textbook due to the author's biographical content. And there are interviews with all types of professionals in the field. The interviews seemed genuine to me, not trying to promote the industry or the images portrayed in the media.

The big takeaway is that this industry is complex, challenging and involves a mostly non-artistic work. Success depends on a mixture of artistic appreciation, business acumen and marketing-sales work.

I think if a young person reads this book and then desires a career in fashion it would be a positive signal. I found the book intrinsically interesting.
