Economies are tremendously complicated dynamic systems. Economists can get insights about them by looking at toy mathematical models. But we can't get a real handle on how they function without large scale simulation computable general equilibrium models. This book, written by the top practitioners in the field, puts readers on the frontier of CGE modeling and also teaches us how real economies will likely operate over time and in response to changes in policy, demographics, and technology. It's a must read for anyone who wants to learn where economics is and where it's going.

'The main conclusion I reached by the conclusion of this marvellous story, was the maturity of the author's writing. I think that it is remarkable for one, relatively youthful, and writing her first book, to capture a mesmerizing tale with such an insight into human beings. She has also written in the first person which I think is very difficult to do. It makes observations too subjective but somehow she has generally avoided that. Often I do not enjoy tales with flashbacks. It interrupts the flow for the reader. However, what she has done is to make the flashbacks relevant to the part of the present tense the story being told. Meera Prabhu wakes up after a terrible accident with absolutely no memory of herself. She sees a stranger in the mirror and seems to be living with another stranger, Ashruth. Ashruth, a doctor by profession and a clown by appearance, claims that he is her fiancé. They were engaged to be married and would have been married already if not for the accident. He keeps on emphasizing on how much she loved him and yet, he keeps her apart from her family for her 'mental state'. Armed with what seems to be her personal diary, Meera tries to grasp her identity and her reality. But no matter how hard she tries, she just seems to be unable to connect. Will Meera break through the hurdles in front of her and be able to connect to her friends and family again? Most importantly, will she ever regain her identity again?
Meera Prabhu is a gem of a protagonist. I connected with her early on and could relate to her questions and really felt for her. Even though she did come across as shallow at times, it was easy to overlook that in her condition. She has been brought up in a protective cocoon of love yet in the end she emerges as this strong and intelligent individual. The character of Santosh is also dealt with some amount of details, mostly through Meera's diary. We get a feeling early on that Santosh is a good person who is easily likeable. However, I feel that Ashruth'c character could have done with some more development as would have Meera''s parents.

Intriguing from the word go!

Just You, Me and a Secret, is a book that is intriguing from the word go. There are many ingredients that made me finish reading the book in a single sitting. It is a thriller, a romance and it is well written.

When the protagonist Meera wakes up in a hospital room with a memory wiped clean, she struggles to deal with the revelations that comes to her one after the other. Ashruth, the doctor to whom she is engaged tries to make her understand the circumstances of their relationship. She finds it difficult to believe that she had fallen in love with Ashruth as she cannot find anything that convinces that she could have fallen in love with the silly man. Even after her personal diary reveals the secrets one after the other, she is battling with her own inner voice, which screams that something is just not right.

Why does she feel attracted to her cousin Santhosh? Why does her own parents appear like strangers to her? Meera battles with her past to find the reasons that will allow her to be at peace with her present. At the end, a Secret that has in its power the ability to destroy many lives emerges.

Memories are what make a life worthwhile. When those moments vanish from one’s mind’s eye, everything appears vague and senseless. Meera’s battle to find herself, her identity, forms the crux of the novel.

Ganga Bharani, a debut author, has done ample justice to her work. She manages to hold the attention of the reader with a clear and crisp narrative. She also throws in surprises which makes the reader turn pages one after the other. A great achievement for a debut novelist.

Love – The universal emotion which binds humanity together. All of us have our own distinct way of showing our love. Some are delightfully expressive. There are times when love helps us to re-visit our past to forge a happy future. Just You Me and a Secret is one such story.

The plot – A protagonist who wakes up not knowing who she is ? A blank past haunts her with only Clara for company. Who is Clara ? Did she have a role in shaping Meera’s forgotten past. you will have to read the book to find out ?

My new found crush has literally swept me off my feat. No I am not talking about another damsel in distress. It’s these books with smaller,compact story lines. Just You Me and Secret is one such book with barely 120 pages. It’s a brisk read from start to finish. The best part is it keeps you guessing till the very end. A promising debut by a talented female writer.

I loved the pace of the story. There wasn’t the usual unnecessary detailing. Sometimes too much detail can hamper the flow. The only negative in an otherwise engaging plot were the rushed film like portions which could have been avoided.

A good first step into the world of publishing for the author. Hopefully the next one raises the bar even further.

About the Author
Douglas Fisher , PhD, is professor of language and literacy education in the Department of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and a classroom teacher at Health Sciences High and Middle College. He teaches preservice courses in literacy and English language learners, graduate courses in reading instruction and intervention, and doctoral courses in policy, research, and literacy. As a classroom teacher, Dr. Fisher focuses on English language arts instruction. He was director of professional development for the City Heights Educational Collaborative and also taught English at Hoover High School.

Dr. Fisher received an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award for his work on literacy leadership. For his work as codirector of the City Heights Professional Development Schools, Dr. Fisher received the Christa McAuliffe Award. He was corecipient of the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English for the article, Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School, published in The English Journal.

Dr. Fisher has written numerous articles on reading and literacy, differentiated instruction, and curriculum design. His books include Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents, Checking for Understanding, Better Learning Through Structured Teaching, and Content-Area Conversations.

Nancy Frey, PhD, is a professor of literacy in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. Through the university s teacher-credentialing and reading specialist programs, she teaches courses on elementary and secondary reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. Dr. Frey also teaches classes at Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego. She is a board member of the California Reading Association and a credentialed special educator and reading specialist in California.

Before joining the university faculty, Dr. Frey was a public school teacher in Florida. She worked at the state level for the Florida Inclusion Network, helping districts design systems for supporting students with disabilities in general education classrooms.

She is the recipient of the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference and the Christa McAuliffe Award for excellence in teacher education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She was corecipient of the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English for the article Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School.

Dr. Frey is coauthor of Checking for Understanding, Better Learning Through Structured Teaching, and Content-Area Conversations. She has written articles for The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, English Journal, Voices in the Middle, Middle School Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Educational Leadership.

How the teacher can make the job easier.

Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey remind the readers that learning has to be goal oriented. Too often, the teacher’s curriculum doesn’t have a clear destination in mind, and that will obviously demoralize the students. When you teach children (or adults) there has to be a place where you want them to end up. What are the conclusions going to be? What will they come away with? Unstoppable Learning, another great book from Solution Tree Press, is a multi-chapter guide to teaching students with their abilities (or lack of them) in mind at all times.

Let’s start with the chapters called “managing Learning.” This one focuses on the teacher-student dynamic, and I stress the importance, because classroom management is the kiss of life or death. The chapter opens up with the famous “don’t smile until December” advice, which the authors make clear is not the best thing. They stress getting to know the students, finding out what’s going on in their lives, making time to speak to them one-on-one. That builds a sense of trust, and it prepares the students for the workplace.

Behavior in the classroom is discussed in the chapter as well. The authors break down the diagnosis into four categories; harmful, distracting, contagious, and testing the system. Dealing with the behavior does not need to be immediate, because the teacher can’t be expected to figure out the cure immediately. Afterward is where the teacher deals with it using the four categories. If the behavior is distracting, then who is distracted, the teacher or the students? Is the misbehaving student looking for attention? The authors give strict (and humorous) criteria for dealing with the behavior. One thing that is stressed throughout is that the teacher should not call out the student in front of others. It can make them defensive.

The book ends with sets of questions for the teachers and students. They include whether or not the students are ready to learn, whether the teacher is ready to teach, and if the students are using academic language. The best thing about this book, from beginning to end, is that it puts the accountability on the educator as a facilitator and manager, more than just a “boss.” Discipline is defined here as providing a safe classroom, not “getting the kids to follow instructions.” It’s certainly not classed as “making little children behave.”

God's Healing Grace

This book was given to me by a sweet friend when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She has told me to stay in the word and I would find the help and peace I need. I read these scriptures each night because it brings me peace, understanding and a closeness to God I never felt before. Even though my cancer has returned twice I never stop reading my book and my faith grows stronger. With this book, my family and my Sunday school class friends along with our strong Bible based church I can face each day with optimism and joy. I know my God is always with me and I have nothing to fear. But I know my strength comes not from me but it's God strength working through me to glorify Him. I only wish everyone could see how easy trusting Him is.

About the Author
Nicholas J. Higham is Richardson Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester in England. He is the 1999 recipient of the Junior Whitehead Prize given by the London Mathematical Society in recognition of his contributions to the field of numerical linear algebra. Professor Higham is the author of more than 60 publications and is an editor of the IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, Linear Algebra and Applications, and the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications.

Another book of advice about writing mathematics

This one has more in it than the Gillman book, which was written a long time back. I needed to check what people have written about the genre of proof. Many times the advice is about expository writing or about the rest of what goes into a mathematical paper.
