About the Author
Rosh Sillars is a veteran photographer with a photojournalism background specializing in people, food and interiors. He earned his BFA in photography at the College of Creative Studies (CCS), Detroit.  Rosh offers his services to traditional media, digital media and corporate clients.  He owns the creative representation firm The Rosh Group, Inc. and teaches at two universities.  Sillars serves as a marketing and social media consultant for the Digital Marketing firm Synectics Media.

Rosh started his first podcast (audio over the internet) in 1999 on business tips hosted by the Rosh.com web site. His first social media business relationship began in 1997.  Sillars co-hosted the prosperous artists podcast and blog with writer Dean Ladouceur beginning March of 2007.  Rosh combined his two passions new media and photography to host NewMediaphotographer.com (June 2008- Sept 2011).  He continues to podcast at roshsillars.com and thedrivenbusiness.com. Other related projects include Citynet Magazine (print and online magazine 2000-2001) and mysuccessradio.com (Internet audio portal 2003-2004). He is the coauthor of the book The Linked Photographers guide to marketing and social media Published by Cengage Learning May 2010 and author of One Hour Photographer.

solid basic information for aspiring professional photographer

One-Hour Photographer is a quick and easy read (one-hour..) for the aspiring professional photographer, that wants to understand the basics/foundation of what it takes to eventually own a successful photography business.

It touches on the photography basics, equipment, composition, lighting, the overall industry, presentation, best practices, business, marketing and social media.
Mixed in with the overall basic information, the author shares some of his business and marketing insights.
I enjoyed learning about the per-image pricing and to think about so-called Combination Code, that extra quality besides the photography core, that makes you stand out from the competition.

As a deliberate choice it has no photographs, charts or illustrations, which is somewhat unusual for a photography related book.
I personally would not mind to see some of Rosh Sillars work inserted as part of a future edition of this book.

In 14 chapters, Rosh covers all aspects of photography, from the equipment side all the way through all business aspects as well. For anyone thinking of taking the plunge into the photography business, Rosh has shared some excellent insights to help someone be successful. Rosh's methods are tried and true and from his own successful experience in the photography business. He finishes the book with a series of assignments that will help you hone your photography and business skills. Easily worth more than his modest asking price and highly recommended.

Practical Advice for New Photographers

One Hour Photographer by Rosh Sillars is a book that can be read in about an hour. I read about half of it one night and the other half another night. The good thing about the book is that it is written in such a practical manner so that you can select any one chapter to read and pull out of it some practical advice. I also recommend that you read it with a note pad nearby because you will want to make notes regarding strategies you will want to implement.

The content of the book is not earth shattering, but it is practical advice and there is so much crammed into just a few pages. I especially like the last part, which gives you a list of assignments to improve both your photography and your business skills.

Having this book is like having Rosh Sillars sitting over your shoulder giving you simple instructions and strategies to implement. I highly recommend it.

About the Author

An Outstanding Book On the Subject of Violence

This book provides both an excellent overview of violence in general and an introduction to specific aspects of violence. Definitional issues and theoretical frameworks are succinctly dealt with in early chapters and specific types of violence (religious, political, gender...) with excellent cases studies are effectively handled in later chapters. The book is highly readable, well organized, and offers a highly helpful summary for each chapter. It is a good source on violence for the general public and the academic community alike, but especially good for anyone who is trying to get a comprehensive understanding of the scope and dimensions of violence. I used it for my research on violence against cultural establishments in the 1960s during China's Cultural Revolution and found the book to be an indispensable source for my research. I first borrowed it but ended up buying it as I found it to be a valuable and worthy source to have for ongoing and future research. I highly recommend this good primer to violence to academic libraries, students at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as members of the general public who wish to acquire a general understanding of violence of all shapes and forms.

Easy to read and very informative

Some of these books on myth that are written by professors can be difficult to read. This book is not like that. This book is easy to ready and understand. The information in it is very good. There is much about how the ancients thought about death that we just don't know. This book will tell you the little we do know about on how the Greeks thought about death. No definite answers, but very interesting.

About the Author

Linda K. Kerber is May Brodbeck Professor in the Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Iowa. She is the author of several books, including No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies (1999) and Toward an Intellectual History of Women (1997). She has served as President of the Organization of American Historians and the American Studies Association and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Jane Sherron De Hart is Professor Emerita of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Co-author of Sex, Gender, and ERA: A State and the Nation (OUP, 1990), and winner of the American Political Science Association's Victoria Schuck Award (1991), she specializes in twentieth-century issues of gender, politics, and policy. She is currently completing a study of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that blends biography and legal history.

Cornelia Hughes Dayton is Associate Professor of History at the University of Connecticut. The author of Women Before the Bar (1995), she is currently writing a book about the life stories of those with mental disorders and their caretakers in eighteenth-century America. She recently launched a new website supplementing her essay "Taking the Trade" about a 1740s abortion trial.

A wonderful introduction to U.S. Women's History

I have used various editions of this book for the past four years in teaching a women's history course at a college-preparatory, single-sex independent high school. I have found this to be an incredibly complete anthology and the new edition is even better than the previous ones. My only complaint about the new edition is that the editors -- both renowned historians in the field -- on a few occasions shortened the articles to the point that the context needed to understand them was missing. However, because of the brevity of the articles, it is the perfect anthology for an introductory course.

The Best Textbook I've Ever Read

I originally purchased this book for a college course; now it sits on my bookshelf, never to be resold. I rarely have enjoyed reading for my classes, but this book not only captures the heart of the female struggles throughout history--it gives examples of the women who lived them.

This book presents the reader with an in-depth analysis of women's traditional roles and their active fight for change while explaining the conditions that determined the feminine experience in different historical periods. But the best benefit of the book was actually learning, and realizing, that the world that my generation (the 20 somethings) was born into is radically different from that of females 50, 40, 30, 20, and even 10 years before us. I realize now that many freedoms I take for granted should be cherished, and more freedoms should be fought for.

Fascinating Reading

I got this book for a Women in History class, and found the content to be fascinating. The focus is on women and what they experienced through American history from the 1600's to the present. Many of the articles are about ordinary women, their lives, their marriages, their restrictions, their struggles, but there are also many great articles about notable women and their achievements despite great odds. This book is a compilation of articles on a whole range of topics, and I can say I probably learned more from this particular book than just about any history book I've read. I was left with a whole new appreciation for what women have gone through in the last several hundred years. I'll add that this book does not have an angry feminist slant as some might expect (I expected this myself going into the class and the book). Rather, it just tells the history of what happened and "what was" in a way that was pretty devoid of any particular social position. You are left to draw your own conclusions about what you read. Of particular interest were articles about the witchcraft hysteria, Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson, and the practice of abortion in early America. The articles were beyond fascinating and I learned so much that I had had no idea about before. Well worth reading even if you aren't in a class.
