In The Miraculous Child, Alvin Aleksi Currier ably retells a Christmas folktale from old Russia. With colorful and stylistically appropriate illustrations by Nadezda Glazunova, The Miraculous Child is a timeless tale of a poor Russian family in a humble log home where a woodcutter, his mother, wife and children have almost nothing to eat, very little to trade or sell, and nothing for the Christmas Feast. The woodcutter encounters a little boy out in a field, shivering and cold. When he brings the lad into his home to share what little poor fare the family has, they discover that it's an angel they have invited in from the cold and a Christmas Feast is held that will never be forgotten. Very highly recommended for the Christmas and folktale collections at grade schools and in community library collections. --Amazon

About the Author
After many years as a Presbyterian clergyman, in 1975 Alexsi founded St. Herman's Hermitage and began a spiritual journey which concluded in his finding a home in the Orthodox Church. In addition to his work as an artist and writer, he travels widely and organizes pilgrimages in Eastern Europe for others to experience Orthodoxy from the inside out.

A treasure to keep

I own most of Alvin Aleksi Currier's children's books and they are all excellent. However this book is my favorite. I love how the author managed to put the beautiful heart-warming story into equally beautiful word, poetry-like. It is written at just the right level of understanding for a child without dumbing it down (like other children book authors do). The illustrations are beautiful and complement the story perfectly. My daughter and I read this many times with the same pleasure. A treasure to keep!

Wonderful Christmas book/gift

I have purchased several of Alvin Aleksi Currier's children's books and all have been excellent. They all are of a spiritual nature, teaching children as well as adults important values in life, in this case being kind to a person in need. The setting is in old world Russia but the story can be universal and is found in other cultures' literature as well. The illustrations are beautiful and are a window into the Russian culture of an earlier age

Same Tale, Different Culture

This is a different version of an old folktale. We enjoyed it, though, and the illustrations are nice. There are strong references to God, so if you are offended by that, skip this book. It has a happy ending. :)

A thoughtful book, but probably a little difficult for beginners

It's good to have a history of Mexico in English which is written by a Mexican scholar. It tends to reflect the concerns of Mexicans rather than the fashionable obsessions of academics in the United States or Great Britain, and these are, for the most part, more taken with politics, power, and socieconomic questions than with race, class and gender. And that's the real strength of this history: it isn't afraid to talk about the evolution and mechanics of the PRI, so it is immediately easier for an outsider to understand its durability as a political machine. It's also quite perceptive in the way it sets the table for the so-called "Mexican Miracle" of 1940-1970: Hernandez Chavez understands that the changes that were wrought by the Revolution and, in particular, by Lazaro Cardenas (1934-1940) were crucial to the success of the economic model, however one regards those results in terms of equity or efficiency. It's also, blessedly, not a history cursed by neoclassical teleology: the development model employed in Mexico must have been "wrong" because things went sour in the 1980s. Sorry, not so. Go back and look at Clark Reynolds classic book published in 1970 on the Mexican economy: if there was trouble in Paradise, Reynolds, nobody's fool, didn't see it coming. In fact, there were intimations of structural problems in some of the analyses floating around after the Tlatelolco massacre in 1968, but no one seemed to think they were insuperable--and that's probably because they weren't. Hernandez Chaves is also openly skeptical of the "nothing but decline" model of Mexico after 1810, and even if you don't buy her analysis, well, you suspect her skepticism is not misplaced, and closer to a Mexican account of things. So what's not to like? The book is a textbook, but it's not a textbook for beginners. Someone who already is in on the kinds of things that academics discuss--like other professionals--will not doubt find this book to be the best one volume history available in English, because it is. But if you know nothing about Mexico, this is probably not a good place to begin: my experience is that its strengths (broad but detailed coverage, sophisticated thinking, ample data) will probably overwhelm a neophyte. On the other hand, if you're ambitious, go for it. You'll get some insight into how Mexicans see their history, which, frankly, is about the only perspective that really matters.

Glad I purchased this used. Difficult for a PhD to decipher.

Don't bother with this. This book is either poorly translated or poorly written...Hard to tell. It is difficult to follow and lacks any pattern of organization. I was looking at this book as a possible supplementary text for college students. It would never work, even for advanced students. I'm a PhD and lost on page 10 of this book.

I read this to get a general overview of Mexican history. It does cover all the major events but in trying to be completely unbiased, this book comes off as practically useless. Porifiro Diaz was a dictator. It's unnecessary to be 'unbiased' about that. I only finished this because I'd already bought it and didn't want to buy another general survey book.

Fantastic introduction to making truffles

Pros: Fabulous recipes - which are easy to half when you don't need six dozen truffles. Clear, easy to follow directions. Fantastic photography. This book gives the home cook the "I can do this" feel in a clear and comfortable way. All of the truffle cream recipes I've tried have been fantastic. Good cursory overview of different chocolate types. Plus, Marzipan!

Cons: A little light on information about the different types of chocolate, and the variances in working with them. The boiled sugar recipes don't mention the absolute sheer danger of doing some of them. For instance, those are not recipes where children should be allowed to help.

Other reviewers have said that her tempering information was insufficient, but I've been able to successfully manage my batches using her techniques. That said, I'm doing very small batches, usually half of a recipe, which may have something to do with how easy it is for me to keep the chocolate in temper while I'm working with it.

I've not made any of the cluster or caramel recipes, since I've got braces on, and braces and sticky candies are never a good mix. However, once they come off, some of those recipes are on my "must have NOW" list.

All in all, I think this book is a must have for the amateur confectioner.

Very True, Well Worth the Read

I'm preparing for level 2 in 6 days. I took a 1-hour break from studying to read this book, and can't agree enough with everything said. I actually laughed out loud when I saw the picture of the study area during the last week before one of the exams: notebook computer on the desk, books, papers, flashcards and other assorted study materials EVERYWHERE. My room looked exactly like that for level 1, and already looks this bad for level 2.

The CFA exams melt your brain and test your ability to learn, learn, learn. It is too bad not everyone is aware how much effort is required.

About the Author
Otto Kroeger is a bestselling author and expert in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(r) (MBTI(r)) Assessment. He served as president of the Association of Psychological Type International and is a current member of the National Training Laboratory Institute of Applied Behavioral Sciences. Kroeger has coauthored four leading books on personality: "Type Talk", "Type Talk at Work", "16 Ways to Love Your Lover", and "Personality Type and Religious Leadership".

Thuesen is Managing Partner of Otto Kroeger Associates. She conducts seminars on interpreting typological skills. She has been a teacher and counselor and has served as Assistant Director of Organizational Development at the White House.

An absolute MUST READ! While personality is my hobby, this clearly laid out book will give you easy ways to recognize the style preferences of others and why your style makes you the way you are. I have much more acceptance of myself and less anger toward others by having the power of this information. When I test elements of it and find them to be true I can work with my new knowledge to lead me through conflict points with much more power and control. Thank you so much!

A Must Have

This book was recommended to me by someone who is trained in Personality Types. I took the questionnaire with this person so this book is the 'companion' to the work I've been doing. But, it is not necessary to use the book along with a professional!!

Type Talk is written very well, easy to understand, with a lot of examples. It's not written in a technical fashion, so any lay person can understand what is discussed.

As far as the information: packed full. This is a great book. I'm thinking of picking up a few copies for some people close to me. (I'd give them my copy when I'm done but I'm going to hang on to for future reference!) The authors don't expect the book to be the final, end-all problem solver. Rather, it's a tool to understand the way people tend to act, think and talk.

It's great for figuring out relationships at home, work or with friends and why we all react the way we do. I highly recommend it.
