If you have a Kindle, forego reading this book. The book references her first book , " The Step Child: The Story of a Broken Childhood" , so much, that this is obviously " Book Two" . I felt I was left hanging in the air for much of this book. The first book is not available in Kindle format. Truly disappointing. It's like trying to bake a cake with no instructions for the batter.

Not Very Good Structure

I am not an expert at Java, but I have a fair amount of experience using Visual Basic and PHP (and some C). I have worked with Java before, having learned the basics from Sam's Teach Yourself Java 6 in 21 days.

I had to use this book for a Java class at school. I am only in chapter 4, but I am not impressed with the layout of ideas in this book. As an example, method overloading is discussed before loops.

The preface for this book claims that this book is for people with "little to no programming experience." However, unless you must use this book, I would recommend a beginner to look elsewhere.

Like reading controlled chaos in a foreign language.

This book is extremely difficult to read as the information is presented in reverse-thought paragraphing, with the topic sentence usually buried inside the paragraph, the example sentence is often first, but never makes its point, and the final sentence sometimes supports the second sentence or references something in a future chapter. Whaaat?

I have very little programming experience with only minor HTML & CSS writing. The Preface specifically states, "This textbook assumes that you have little or no programming experience...The explanations in this textbook are written clearly in straightforward sentences..." Yay! Wait... Huh? Um, no. I heartily disagree.

By chapter 2, I felt overwhelmed with programmer mental processing. I am married to a programmer and know what this feels like. To a non-programmer, it is like being an amateur hiker and trying to climb straight up a mountain no matter the terrain or mega-sized rocks, rather than using the switchback path.

This book needs a serious overhaul with a non-techie English major to help remove the floundering illogical and non-comprehensible writing structure. It is written with too much of a programmer's hand, and not enough of a "How'd ya do that?" view. The further I read, the more this became status-quo.

This book is 1000 pages because it is often wordy without any supporting or concluding examples and statements. Although many of the Figures/examples seem accurate, they usually require the reader to turn the page in order to view them, flipping back and forth to re-read the slacking explanation.

It is difficult to move forward from a chapter because the exercises do not always match with the current knowledge base. I have had to spend a lot of time online finding clarification on concepts as the book does not provide assistance. (I am an 'A' student and rarely need outside assistance to "get" the instruction or text.) The author makes too many leaps and assumes too much reader understanding. Even my spouse agreed there were some big steps without structure.

Further, and most frustrating as a student, is the book's lack of instruction. There are no formal or informal step-by-step instructions, no base explanations of concepts, no ease of understanding the vocabulary, too many references to what the student "will be learning in future chapters," and each current example lacks presentation consistency as though written by different authors.

In conclusion, if reading a tech-manual written in a foreign (programming?) language is your thing, then this book is the ticket. However, if you are wanting to learn Java, but do not want to pull your hair out and cry in front of your spouse, this is NOT the book for you.

Terrible for a basic Java class.

I have a basic understanding of programming. I HAVE to use this book for a class. The questions in our class have NOTHING to do with this book. I understand the English language very well, what this book lacks is a cohesive writing style. It lacks explanations of ideas and overall, wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I moved to L.A. from Indiana to pursue everyone's Hollywood dream of becoming an actor. I had, and continue to have, reasonable expectations. I understood it was imperative to learn the business side of things. You need to know not just how to act, but as the book says, how to become an actor. I read this book my first month in L.A. It provides invaluable advice on topics including resumes, cover letters, auditions and representation, among other things. I highly recommend this book to any and all actors out there. For new actors, you will receive necessary practical information. And for experienced actors, it never hurts to have as many perspectives on the business as possible.

It's a simple and easy read and best of all, to the point. I like a book that does not waste my time. This was exactly what I was looking for. It is well written and concise. Puts quick information at your fingertips on the steps one should take to become an actor. Enough to gain additional interest on the subject and maybe even give it a shot on my own well done. A+

Very good practical advice that would take years to learn on your own!. So glad I bought it. If you want to act learn from someone who has already been through it. Very easy to understand and not overly wordy. Short concise and to the point.

Very complete

Very well written book. Full of knowledge, author, Allen Greenfield has a vast knowledge of subject and articulates his points and facts in a way for all to understand. The way each degree is broken down, and the history aspect is spectacular. this is one of those literatures you buy one for the collection and and another copy to use for studying and research. Also the work on point chaud is unbelievable and will expand how you see things. INSTANT CLASSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It really works!

My family and I have periodically brought our nutrition intake into line by following the nutrition guidelines in this book.
Dr, Haas' program is easy to follow, flexible and brings results! There are recipies, levels that reward results, and some common-sense dietary changes that can really do you good!
For me (male, age 50), most recently (over the past 90 days) I enjoyed 20 lb. weight loss to my weight of 25 years ago (from 180 to 160), total cholesterol from 193 to 151, HDL (good cholesterol) from 29 to 36 and LDL (bad cholesterol) from 129 to 101. Moderate exercise before and throughout (no significant increase). My doctor's office even asked for my copy of the program!

Eat to Win is tough, but worth it

I've "done" this diet three or four times over the years to get back on track nutritionally and physically. Following its four-week menu, the results are amazing. If a user begins by getting the blood chemistry profile Haas recommends at the beginning of the book and a follow-up profile at the end of the four-week period, the improvements are undeniable. My doctor was impressed.
I'm not sure what some of the other commenters below are talking about when they complain about processed foods or insulin levels. The only problem with the diet is that most of the food isn't very tasty. It lacks the fat, salt, and processed sugary foods that so many Americans are addicted to, so some folks may experience something like withdrawal during the first weeks of the diet. There's only one way to look at this though: getting out of the habit of eating these unhealthy foods is probably exactly what your body needs (as more and more Americans do all the time witness the epidemic of overweight, sluggish people in this country).
Bottom line: this is a rigorous diet. If you're tough and determined, and follow the instructions properly, you will look and feel years younger. You will discover you have more energy. Perhaps more energy than you will know what to do with. I'm not a jock either. I'm a computer programmer, but I've done this diet. I know it works.

Great book!

I've used the information in this book for a very long time, and it is the most effective diet i've found of maintaining correct body weight, and increasing physical and mental performance. Although the book is old, the advice is solid and I don't beleive it will ever become outdated. I only have one small complaint, and that is at times Dr. Haas comes across as too strict on sticking to the eating plan. Ocassional deviation from it, I think is necessary to stay balanced! No need to worry _too_ much about fat consumption. Nonetheless, it deserves 5 stars

Noonan (What I Saw at the Revolution), George Bush's most publicized speechwriter, describes her book accurately as "advice and anecdotes about the writing and giving of speeches." Not political speeches, which are probably an art form unto themselves, but the kind of speeches most people are at some time called upon to deliver. Noonan states her advice clearly: No speech should last more than 20 minutes; the text should be written out (no ad-libbing from outlines); humor is essential; read your draft speech aloud (speaking is different from writing); keep sentences short (the audience is hearing it, not reading it). One section deals with the special requirements of writing for other people. Shorter sections deal with situations such as toasts, tributes and eulogies. There are also tips on handling questions, walking up to the platform and meeting the audience afterward. The anecdotes deal chiefly with Noonan's adventures on the political circuit and in the White House with Presidents Reagan and Bush and are the fluffy sort of things the author herself probably uses facing audiences. The advice is practical and fairly obvious, but if speaking in public is indeed most people's Number One Fear, this is a calming, logical and sometimes entertaining guide.

Drop your dislike of her politics (especially if you're a liberal Democrat). Ignore your instinct to treat this tome as yet another how-to approach to speechifying. Because Noonan, author of What I Saw at the Revolution and former speechwriter for Republican presidents, has bared her soul in an engaging and serious attempt to get all of us "speaking right and speaking simply." Sure, the book is disorganized--and there aren't any outlines or long lists. But what Noonan offers is solid advice, delivered simply. Speeches should last only 20 minutes. Write out your text. Use plain and simple language. Speeches must have content. And in exhorting her readers to do this or that, she inserts personal lessons she has learned, as well as examples from the greatest speakers, including Lincoln, Churchill, Reagan, and, yes, Earl Spencer at Diana's funeral.
