About the Author
John C. Kotz is an emeritus State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College at Oneonta. Educated at Washington and Lee University, as well as Cornell University, he held National Institutes of Health postdoctoral appointments at the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology in England and at Indiana University. Professor Kotz has co-authored three textbooks in several editions - INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, and THE CHEMICAL WORLD - along with the INTERACTIVE GENERAL CHEMISTRY CD-ROM. He also has published research on inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry. He was a Fulbright Lecturer and Research Scholar in Portugal in 1979 and a visiting professor there in 1992, as well as a visiting professor at the Institute for Chemical Education (University of Wisconsin, 1991-1992) and at Auckland University in New Zealand (1999). He also was an invited speaker at a meeting of the South African Chemical Society and at the biennial conference for secondary school chemistry teachers in New Zealand. In addition, a recent tenure as a mentor of the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team, Professor Kotz has received numerous honors, including a State University of New York Chancellor's Award (1979), a National Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992), the Estee Lectureship in Chemical Education at the University of South Dakota (1998), the Visiting Scientist Award from the Western Connecticut Section of the American Chemical Society (1999), and the first annual Distinguished Education Award from the Binghamton (New York) Section of the American Chemical Society (2001).

Paul M. Treichel, received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. After a year of postdoctoral study in London, he assumed a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as department chair from 1986 through 1995 and was awarded a Helfaer Professorship in 1996. He has held visiting faculty positions in South Africa (1975) and in Japan (1995). Retiring after 44 years as a faculty member in 2007, he is currently Emeritus Professor of Chemistry. During his faculty career he taught courses in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and scientific ethics. Professor Treichel's research in organometallic and metal cluster chemistry and in mass spectrometry, aided by 75 graduate and undergraduate students, has led to more than 170 papers in scientific journals. John R. Townsend, Professor of Chemistry at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, completed his B.A. in Chemistry as well as the Approved Program for Teacher Certification in Chemistry at the University of Delaware. After a career teaching high school science and mathematics, he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at Cornell University, where he also received the DuPont Teaching Award for his work as a teaching assistant. After teaching at Bloomsburg University, he joined the faculty at West Chester University, where he coordinates the chemistry education program for prospective high school teachers and the general chemistry lecture program for science majors. He has been the university supervisor for more than 60 prospective high school chemistry teachers during their student teaching semester. David A. Treichel, Professor of Chemistry at Nebraska Wesleyan University, received a B.A. degree from Carleton College. He earned a M.S. and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Northwestern University. A fascinating survey of a fascinating subject

How does time function? What is ecstasy? What is illusion? How does the kundalini work? These questions and more are answered in the amazing work. In the first half, the author gives a clear and concise explanation of tantrik cosmology, explaining exactly how tantra perceives, men, women and indeed, perception itself. This is followed by a lengthy treatment of the tantrik path of spiritual illumination/transformation which dissolves the world of illusion; the second half of the book features page after page of beautiful tantrik painting & sculpture from India, Nepal and China. I cannot recommend this book too highly.

It's really, really hard to put any religion into words that someone can understand and read in one evening. Philip Rawson succeeds in this task. Part of his success is the heavy use of pictures and illustrations, which makes the essence of Tantra easily understandable to the visual learner.

Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Diego. He has conducted numerous research projects awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Veterans Administration, and the pharmaceutical industry. Author of more than 350 articles and chapters, Dr Stahl is the author of the bestsellers Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology and The Prescriber's Guide.

Excellent to review ADHD pathology

Great pictures and concise descriptions and definitions/explanations in order to fully understand what parts of the brain are involved in each of the ADHD symptoms (impulsivity, distractibility, lack of attention, etc). I would suggest this book for psychiatrists like me, who don't necesarily see lots of patients with ADHD in order to explain them whenever they ask questions about what could be the mechanisms for their symptoms.

Dr. Stahl has a magical method for explaining the neurocognitive processes for difficult concepts to students & patients. My patients are visual and appreciate the images. I can use the sections with medications to guide the options and rationales for choice. Helpful to my adult and pediatric patients.

In this well-researched, scholarly study, Major traces the roots of Washington's Panama Canal policy deep into the 19th century, with emphasis on the rivalry between the U.S. and Britain over the proposed isthmian waterway. The author, who teaches history at the University of Hull in England, describes how the U.S. gained treaty rights to build, maintain and fortify the canal and explains how the canal affected Panamanian politics and economics. Built between 1904 and 1914, the canal performed a dual role as a thoroughfare for maritime commerce and a conduit for seapower. Major argues that the canal more than justified itself in both categories throughout WW II but lost its strategic and economic importance in the postwar years. In a later section of the study he charts the U.S. government's decision to transfer canal authority to Panama via treaties signed in 1977 during the Carter administration. Those treaties stipulated that in 1979 the Canal Zone, created three quarters of a century earlier, would cease to exist.

British scholar Major has examined a wealth of U.S. government documents bearing on American involvement in Panama and the Canal Zone, from Theodore Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter. Unlike such previous scholars as David McCullough, who have concentrated on how the United States acquired the rights in 1903 to build an isthmian canal, Major focuses on the subsequent history of the Canal Zone. His concern is how the United States administered the zone, governed its people, and intervened in Panamanian politics for more than seven decades. Despite its considerable achievement, Major's work will not supplant Walter LaFeber's The Panama Canal: The Crisis in Historical Perspective (1978; LJ 10/15/89. rev. ed.), which should also be consulted. Recommended for academic libraries.

More Heat - Less light on an Old Story

This is a good albeit flawed study. It is well-researched but some will question its conclusions, the direct ones and the subtle ones. The footnotes are good and reflect careful research. The index is comprehensive and useful. Nonetheless, this book errs on being unduly critical of the U. S. role and administration. One is hard pressed to find a less imperialistic nation than the United States. Look at the French, Belgium, English, Japanese, etc. imperial examples.

Specifically the book covers the years from 1904, when Panama with help from the U. S. separated from Colombia in November 1903, to 1979. The book also includes some useful information dating back several hundred years. The author points out that many European countries wanted access to the Isthmus of Panana, only fifty miles wide in some sections, for trade and imperialistic reasons. England, France, Spain and other European countries wanted to build and control a canal to unite the two oceans. It took the boisterous Theodore Roosevelt to do it. His actions have been widely condemned or praised by countless historians.

It is well to remember that had TR not acted, and I am not an apologist for him, Panama would have remained a neglected province of Colombia. Remember as well that Panama, along with four other Latin American nations, joined Gran Colombia voluntarily in the 1820s. It was quickly ignored and scorned by Colombia for the next 80 years. To wit: there were over 80 up risings, attempts at achieveing independence, against Colombia during those years. They were not happy campers and yes, they were ignored by the government in Bogota. Cognizant of European ambitions on Panama, one far thinking senator suggested that Colombia move its capital to Panama City to guarantee its continued sovernity over the Isthmus. It never happened and the senator lost his seat.

In an attempt to keep Europe at bay, Colombia signed a series of understandings with the U.S. to guarantee their hegemony over Panama. The U. S. even intervened or threatened to do so several times when Panama tried to establish their independence from Colombia. The U.S. wasn't pure either, it wanted to eventually build a canal in the region. Plus the Monroe Doctrince was still in full force. Colombia's experience highlights the danger of seeking a powerful protector -- they may take you over.

The book has five major themes. "The canal's defense and its place in America's strategy, the Zone's regimental system of government, its strictly segregated labour force, its commercial development at the expense of Panama, and the equally controversial issue of U.S. government intervention in Panamanian Politics."

Clearly, the author has a very biased and erroneous point of view. Too bad for it weakens his book and negates all the serious research he did. He should have been more balanced.

Panama's Right to Self-Rule

During the US-Panama formation of bilateral foreign policy making, John Major researches a book that gives much attention to how the two nations came into co-existence and the great difficulties that followed. It was greatly unfortunate that "political semantics" took another form of how the US wish to maintain dominion over Panamanian politics. All political actors could not ignore the realities that at some point even political semantics and political theater runs its course. In particular and especially an event that changed the course of US-Panamanian politics. On January 9, 1964, flag riots in Panama made President Lyndon B. Johnson initiate and respond to taking political steps to how the future of US-Panama and US-Panama Canal would take shape. Panamanians were tired of Colombian exploitation for about 80 years (1821-1903) and even US domination from 1903-1999. It takes time for human beings to finally ask and raise the question, "Is this right and ethical, if not, why do we continue to do it?" It was time for Panama to have its own sovereignty without outside interference. Colombians can cry that Panama was a Colombian territory, which is a complete fabrication. Their interest were in the Panama Railroad and all the money Bogota would accumulate at the expense of all Panamanians. They took 90% of the money and left Panama with about 10%. They wanted the Panama Canal but when the French abandoned the project, they did nothing to complete it. All Panama wanted was to be free from Colombia, once and for all, permanently.

I am not going to speak about the thing that I had this book in master degree, this is another topic.
Still this book is the worst book i have ever read. Not only the topic is completely not interesting but also the structure of the book is confusing.
FInally it is writen by non native english speaker and it is impossible to read.
I do not recommend it to anyone.

At least a book contains all the Fischer's games!!!

I think for such a great player ( or greatest ) as Fischer, his complete collection of games should be published. Unfortunately for the time being , no one had done this job. Fischer's " my 60 memorable games" covers only games up to 1967. Wade's book only a collection and with a few games annotated and also has been out of print. Soltis book only covers 100 games, so for the time being this is only choice. I hope in the future someone can do the job produce and annatate all the games of Bobby Fischer!!! But for the time being what we can do is to buy this book, and play through and help with a computer to appreciate Fischer's games!!!

Chess 101

Bobby fishcer may not be a good human being, But if theyre is anything he does know is chess. Even though theyre are no notes with the games, the amount of games really does make up for it!!
you can learn alot just by going through the games. So if youre a fan of chess you really owe it to youreself to get this book...I still have a long way to go though!!!!
so get youre notebook ready and prepare to do some serious studying.

Comprehensive book. Unfortunately, not insightful nor user friendly.

Comprehensive:

I am a big fan of Fischer, the chess player, and it is a shame that his personal beliefs are something that his fans have to come to terms with. That beings said, this book has arguably every published game that Fischer played.

Not insightful:

The author's annotations are very brief and do not explain anything beyond the obvious. Some of the games have a cryptic "!" or "?" symbol with out any explanation of WHY the move deserves attention. So if the person is below intermediate strength, this book might be more frustrating than useful.

Not user friendly:

Be ready to squint your eyes. The physical presentation of this book is very inconvenient at best. The author did everything he could to compress this book into the smallest layout possible at the cost of creating eye strain, he even removed the "x" capture symbol to save space. Every game has a diagram that is literally about the size of a US quarter [see image]. Also, all the moves are typed in BOLD and the annotations are printed in plain text. It would have been much easier to read if the moves in plain text and the annotations in bold. Forty move games are crushed into a 4 by 1 rectangle which makes it difficult to read the moves off a table without losing your place.

Over all, this is a good book but could be better if it was user friendly.
