Why Mara is Elisa's Perfect Companion

I have to give Carson credit--these prequels definitely serve to help round out the world and give us a different look at Elisa (or the role she fills). In "Shadow Cats", told from Alodia's POV, we saw Elisa as a younger girl, frightened, but understanding so much more than Alodia gave her credit for. Now in "The Shattered Mountain", though Elisa has a very small role near the end, Carson shows us how from the very first moment Mara saw that Elisa was special and would understand her.

This also serves as a way to establish the reason for a lot of Mara's early antagonism as well as the bond she shared with many of the children shown throughout the first two books. In a matter of less than a hundred pages we see Mara go from a dreamer who saw freedom only in how far she could run to a leader, keeping a dozen or so children grounded and brave against impossible odds.

I wouldn't say that Mara is hard or grim; she has moments of such, but who wouldn't under such odds? She is trying to keep frightened, starving, injured and grieving children alive while avoiding the Invierno who are everywhere. She makes a lot of decisions that are hard and doesn't have a lot of time for coddling. Survival is on the line and discomfort now could save their lives.

I already liked Mara from the books, so this was just icing. This served to illustrate why she is such a good fit with Elisa. I do think this was a story you could only fully appreciate if you had read the books first. The details we learned throughout those books are fully explored here and thus all the more appreciated.

Excellent Novella!
By Step Into Fiction
This world, these characters, this story is just amazing. She could put out a novella about these characters eating a meal and I would definitely read it just because I can't get enough of everything that Rae Carson has created. Not to mention all of these covers are so brilliant, beautiful and attention grabbing. If you don't know what series I'm talking about then I suggest you go out and buy the first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns; you can thank me later.

Mara fell in love with a boy. It all starts with that, doesn't it? Not only did she fall in love with a boy but she was planning on running away with said boy. Her father would never approve their marriage and she was safer farther away from him. Problem is, she never gets the chance to live out her happily every after. Her village is viciously attacked and many are dead or left for dying. It's up to her, the man she loves' younger brother and a few other children varying in ages from four to fourteen. Julio, the man she was to run away with, used himself as a distraction so she could save herself and the few children left standing. It was a brave, selfless thing to do and who knows if he's survived or was caught during his distraction.

This novella is the story of how Mara went from being a girl in love to being a girl who care and look out for those who needed it. She went from being a girl abused by her father to a girl who would lead others to safety. Just like how Elisa grew so much in her first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, we can see how much Mara grew in this novella. Mara is a character I really like in this series and now, she is one I truly admire.

If you love this series, like I said, there's no reason for you not to check out this novella. If you're like me, you can't get enough of this world, these characters and this story so don't deny yourself a chance for more now.

Heartbreaking and amazing short story from this epic trilogy.

After having read and loved The Bitter Kingdom yesterday I knew I had to read this novella right away. And I'm so glad I did. The Shattered Mountain is an amazing short story. Although it isn't that short, it is one hundred pages. Yet I wished it was longer. Because I loved reading about Mara, and her story. The writing is as beautiful as ever. And the world just as deadly.

My review won't be all that long, since the novella is short and I don't won't to spoil everything that happens :) The Shattered Mountain is told from the point of view of Mara, who we get to know in the Girl of Fire and Thorns books. This is the story about her life before she is the maid of Elisa. How she got there. And oh. It is amazing and heartbreaking and just perfect.

If you read the summary, you know what this novella is about. Mara is seventeen years old, and she's living with her Pa in a small village. I hated her father. He abuses her, and he didn't seem nice at all. Happy we didn't see too much about him. But she's also happy. Because she has a boyfriend; Julio. And oh. Julio just seemed so amazing, and I loved him, and it breaks my heart, because having read the other books I knew what would happen. Sobs. But so amazing. It is really heartbreaking. And I loved it all.

The same day that Mara and Julio is planning on running away their village gets attacked by the Inviernos. And oh. It is so heartbreaking. Because they are killing everyone with their fire and arrows. Yet I loved reading about it. So many things happen after that. Mara gets away with a bunch of children, where she is the oldest one and have to take care of them all. But it's hard. Because they don't have enough food, and they have to travel in the mountain for at least a week. I loved every second of it.

We get to meet many characters as well. Loved Julio. And I loved his brother, Adán. He was just so strong. And I loved reading about Raynaldo as well. Kind and strong, yet they are both young. But tiny Teena broke my heart. She was just so little and so strong yet broken as well. I just loved reading about them all. The plot in this book is also really, really good, and I could not stop reading. There is action, heartbreak, romance and just everything. It is a very exciting read, and I'm so thrilled that I read it.

I loved reading from Mara's point of view, and I just wish it had been ever longer. I also love these novella's that Rae writes. I hope she will write many more from this amazing series :) I think you all would love this short story. Especially if you have read The Girl of Fire and Thorns. But even if you haven't read those books I think you would love this one. Because it's amazing. And heartbreaking. But it have some hope. It is a truly amazing novella, and I simply cannot wait to read more from Rae Carson.

Tries to do too much?

After reading this book, and using the first half of it in conjunction with an introduction to relativity and QM course, I question the authors' motivation for writing it.

The book is split into two parts, part I: relativity an QM, and part II: applications.

Part I:
The first half of the book probably would have gotten a four star rating from me. There are relevant example problems presented, and although the descriptions and derivations of equation sometimes do take a lot of work to decipher, this is to be expected of a physics text. Illustrations are often provided, commonly in the form of graphs illustrating results from experiments and agreement with predictions. The authors go through a bit of trouble to explain a lot of the experiments that were used to test whichever concept is being studied, which can be a good method of learning. Example problems are good, and although many solutions are omitted, they exist in the student manual.

Part II:
The application part of the book is what really makes this book only just meh. The author tries to cover huge areas of subject matter in a very short space. Many of these chapters are much better suited to entire texts, and indeed, if you wish to learn about them that is the route I suggest. In describing the standard model, nuclear physics, and astrophysics, Tipler includes almost no derivations and presents all equations (few) without proof. Sometimes a hand-waving argument is made, but these chapters are extremely unsatisfying. They read much more like a popular science paperback then an undergraduate physics textbook. In my opinion, Tipler should have omitted select chapters and focused attention into rigorously developing a few areas of application, rather than merely describing all the ones he could think of. The included section on astrophysics, in particular, uses almost none of the relativity and quantum mechanics of the past five hundred pages, and amounts to a merely descriptive anecdote of the universe.

With more focus, Tipler could have made this a good text, but as it stands, it is only just OK.

Mediocre Introduction to Modern Physics

What can I say? I used this textbook for an introductory modern physics course, and I have been disappointed. Actually if I could rate this book a 2.5 I would, but it was really leaning more towards 2 than 3. There is only one good aspect to this text: it does give some insightful historical background without being overly distracting. However, it fails to do most things which such an introductory text should aim to accomplish. The explanations are mediocre. Lackluster conceptual descriptions are followed by formulas often given without any explanation to how they are derived, and even when they are derived, so many steps are omitted that it takes resorting to other sources just to figure it out. I understand that a physics test should not spoon-feed the reader mathematical derivations, since the process of working it out yourself is very beneficial, but this text stretches the limit of omitting steps way too far, unlike any other text I have ever used. The example problems worked out in each section are often trivial or poorly chosen. Furthermore, the questions at the end of each chapter are by my judgment are poorly phrased, and do not help to build an overall grasp of the material as they should. In fact more than half of the questions involve just plugging in numbers into formulas, which does not do anything except provide practice flipping pages. In general the text contains many typos and mistakes, including in the questions. Also, the author too often directs the student to refer to previous sections in order to refresh the understanding of a certain topic or mathematical derivation. This approach is used excessively, detracting from the ability to put one's head around the material in the section.

Instead of using this textbook, I would highly recommend the text by Beiser, which I used in a different class. It is written in a much easier to understand way, and provides the necessary motivation for each mathematical description without going over the top. The example questions are excellent, and it also lays out a nice historical backbone to the material. You will be able to survive using Tipler's text, but you will have a much better time studying from Beiser, as well as coming out with a much better understanding of Modern Physics.

Not one of Berry's best

I am a longtime reader of Steve Berry's books and really enjoyed his earlier efforts, especially the first few Cotton Malone thrillers. However, as often happens with series, it seems that with time they lose something. Whether this is the fault of the reader or author is hard to say. Whichever it is, I have noticed that the last few Malone books have been disappointing for me, and it is the same with The King's Deception.

To give credit where credit is due, Berry does try to stir things up, and this latest book for the most part does without the familiar cast of characters that usually flesh out his stories. And he is a good writer who does his research and ably evokes the locations which serve an important function in his historical mysteries. The book does move along at a brisk pace, and for the most part you should find it entertaining.

However, the problems I have with it really distract from the experience of reading it. First, and most importantly, the central mystery is rather flimsy and revealed early on. And then the intricate machinations built up around the plot, which involves the CIA trying to solve a mystery involving the Tudor dynasty so as to have leverage over the British Government seem to lack a certain logical consistency [without giving away too much, the CIA is searching for proof of an historical scandal which the British already know about- so why don't they just move the evidence and therefore eliminate the possible validation of any clues found by the Americans?]. And again, without giving too much away, the shadowy Daedulus Society at the center of the action has its own mystery which should be obvious almost immediately to anyone paying attention- something a few of the characters don't seem to do.

Aside from the weak internal logic of the plot, another drawback for me is something I have noticed more and more often in fiction, which is a tendency by male authors to appeal to female readers by injecting storylines which play to their sensibilities, in this case the ramifications of the illegitimacy of Cotton Malone's son Gary. With the majority of fiction readers and best selling authors being women, I understand the survival reflex at work here, and I cannot blame male authors for trying to tap into their feminist sides. But nonetheless I find it sad to see the spy thriller morphing into a dysfunctional family saga. I am sure this comment will get me branded by some as a sexist or misogynist,but it simply is a nostalgic plea for a good old fashioned action thriller sans the pop psychology of Dr. Phil.Is that so much to ask for?

One last criticism- Berry really overuses the grammatical device of short, staccato sentences to build tension. Now this is a tried and true technique, but it just seemed to me that every paragraph ended like this, and it became quite annoying by mid book. I don't recall Berry doing this in previous novels- or perhaps I just have less patience than I used to for this constant evocation of breathless anticipation.

The final verdict is that this is not one of the author's better works, but it is still a somewhat interesting and action charged adventure that is fine for a day at the beach or a long airline flight. It won't require much thinking on your part, and you may find yourself questioning the motivations and actions of the characters, but if you don't pay too much attention to the details you'll enjoy a few hours with Cotton Malone as he once again comes to the aid of his country.

Another Homerun by Berry

I will start by saying I am a big Steve Berry/Cotton Malone fan. With that disclaimer out of the way, I will say that his latest effort has kept me in the stable of fans for his novels.

The plot centers around a CIA operation to blackmail the English government into pressuring Scotland not to release the Lockerbie bomber for humanitarian reasons. The story is told by Cotton to his ex-wife, Pam, after the fact, so we go in knowing that the CIA Operation failed and that Cotton survived.

The author then weaves a really interesting plot around the CIA trying to prove an old myth that Elizabeth I was actually a male who was substituted for the original Elizabeth who died in her early teens.

The author builds his plot around actual historical facts and places. As usual, he has done his homework and accurately describes the places and historical events. One actually gets the feeling reading the book that one is really in those places described. One of the reasons I enjoy Berry's writing. Many of the places used in the book are ones that I have visited myself and can actually picture in my mind's eye exactly what he describes.

As is normal for Berry, at the end of the book, he explains that which he created to make the story work, that which is fact and that which is conjecture - something I wish some other authors would do.

You really do not have to have read the other Cotton Malone novels to enjoy this one, but having some background into the characters does help, but again, not required. So, if you have not read any of Berry's other books, this is a good place to start. And of course, if you are already a fan don't miss this one.

Choppy, confusing, and pointless

This author never offers compelling characters but sometimes writes interesting mysteries. This particular story is so disjointed and pointless that I cannot find a single thing about it to recommend. The story lines - such as they are - are clumsy, the conversations are annoyingly shallow, and the complete miss on what could have been a great tale about a long-rumored historical mystery was disappointing and a complete bore. This book reads more like "Want to see my pictures from my trip to London?" than an actual story. And really, the requisite "then we had an interesting weekend" hint at some casual sex thrown in at the end was so completely gratuitous that it made me laugh out loud. Sadly, I'd recommend that you waste neither your time nor money on this one.

Romance no.. Brilliant yes

This review is hard for me because I have a love hate relationship with this book. The story writting was great at times almost brilliant. But in the end I hated the book because i bought this book expecting a romance story. There is nothing romantic about it and considering that is what i wanted I really wanted to throw my kindle when I was done. I won't reash the synopsis. Caleb is a unfaithful manwhore...who is not what he seems and he is a con artist who uses people/women. Never believe anything he says.

Even though i gave the book a low rating, had it been listed in a different genre...mystery and not romance I probably would of given it 5 stars.

Caleb is definitely most women’s nightmare when it comes to an arrogant personality of one that thinks he is all that and owed by most women. And as it has been stated, he is the bad boy everyone loves to hate. But how many true Caleb’s are out there and play the field as he does and get by with it? More than we would like to admit.
Caleb owns his own company and looks at woman as his next score. He is stringing 3 along at this time and his time for his secret little rendezvous is coming to an end.
His live in girlfriend, Sarah is in the dark on his indiscretions until she comes across an email that gives her the opportunity to find out what he has been doing all along. Discovering his true self, Sarah calls him out on all of it and leaves him. In his despair, he’s driving and has an accident causing him to have memory loss.
Has Caleb changed from the person he used to be and is this memory loss a blessing for a new beginning for Sarah?
I think Ms. McNeil hit this one perfectly. I hate the man but Ms. McNeil wrote this so well, she deserves the rating she got from me.

Intense!

Caleb is a Man-Ho nothing good to say about him, well maybe his Cabinets are Exquisite. He is in a dysfunctional relationship and yes he is a major reason for that and is it really worth it tho? Yes. Caleb want's a women at the times he wants and that is all the time. He is about to be brought down quite a few pegs tho!

I was given this book for an honest review. So here it goes, I loved it! Yes we all have known man-ho's and wanted them brought down. The POV of Caleb really got to me, no I never felt sorry for him just glad when he got his ass handed to him. I cheered of course, I know bad me but oh did he deserve it! I can tell you the ending was way out of left field and I loved it! I really like when an Aurthur can throw me a curve ball! I can't wait to read Caleb 2!

Excellent Introduction & Reference

This in-depth look into transaction processing provides a wonderful place to start when considering implementation in your application(s). Cover-to-cover, this is an EXTREMELY easy read and doesn't try to be "fancy" or use complicated wording as many other books on the topic do.

Before reading any other transaction books or jumping into API document, this is a MUST MUST MUST MUST read. When developing an application that has transaction support, this is wonderful as a reference in order to include data in presentations, summaries, position papers, internal documentation, etc.

No only will this benefit a general developer, but also benefit people not in the development environment. This allows for clarification of communication between departments without going into API-specific implementation details.

Essential reading for back office server developers

This book has a special place in my heart, since I read it front to back on a plane before an interview with my current employer. The information I picked up was timely to say the least.
Even if you are not interviewing for job, this book will be a very useful for those unfamiliar with basic to intermediate TP concepts. While the products the book covers are not as snazzy as the OTS systems and EJB, they are the rocks that are keeping everything working today while these newer technologies get their kinks worked out.
This should be required reading for any project that is developing a big system. I read it again recently and found that I had missed a lot from the first read. To me, this book is as important as the Design Patterns book.

Excellent intro to transaction principles

This book was written in 1997 which is often considered ancient in "Internet-years" but it is still very relevant because it focuses on fundamental principles of transaction processing (TP) rather than the latest whiz-bang technologies that optimize TP.

For those of you who aren't TP experts, a transaction is a computer operation that meets the ACID test. ACID here stands for:

Atomic - the steps that comprise transaction succeed or fail as one, there is no partial success.

Consistent - the internal data structures of the system(s) remain consistent with business rules.

Isolated - the data read or manipulated by the transaction is not altered during the duration of the transaction's execution.

Durable - the results of the transaction are persisted

Why does this matter to the system user or stakeholder? The canonical example is that of the ATM machine (or the "handy bank" if you're Australian). When you withdrawl money from an ATM, it has to go out and validate you have enough funds to meet the withdrawl, reserve those funds, and dispense cash - all within the same transaction. If the ATM failed after your bank account had been debited but before you'd gotten your money, you'd be very upset; conversely if the cash was dispensed but the debit procedure failed, the bank would be very upset. Ted provides very amusing analogy for this using a wedding ceremony but you can read that in his book.

There's a whole lot more to transaction processing beyond ACID and the ATM example, including two-phase commit (TPC), high-availability, massive concurrency, and crash recovery. To find out about all of these topics, read the book. One thing to remember though is that most application developers will never have to deal with the extremely complex details of providing a working and robust transaction management implementation, but like any technology it's important to understand the technology's fundamental principles and mechanics to effectively use it.

The book itself is extremely dense. The content of the book is "only" 324 pages long but covers a large amount of ground in a good amount of detail. Definitely read in a quiet place free of interruptions with a strong cup of coffee.

One shortcoming of the book is that it was written in 1997 so it doesn't cover TP implementations in Java (e.g. JTA, EJBs, etc.) but it was nice to finally find out what the heck IBM's CICS and IMS products are.

Interestingly enough, I have never had to deal with complex transaction processing (i.e. two-phase commit) in my short IBM career. This is probably because I've worked on business-to-consumer (B2C) applications where only one data source is involved rather than a business-to-business system where multiple data sources are involved. I'll have to ask the B2B guys if they get heavy into two-phase commit or if it's not an issue.

The reason I read this book is because I've always been a bit mystified by Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). When I joined IBM, I knew the word, but I was not familiar with such topics as object-relational persistence, object remoting, and transaction processing, so to me EJBs were simply things that took four classes/interfaces to do what I could do in one simple POJO. Ted Neward, in a very interesting web interview on the Serverside.com mentioned that he used to think EJBs were completely worthless, but during the process of writing Effective Enterprise Java came to realize that they were not worthless but rather over-marketed. He said that they should have been called Transactional JavaBeans rather than Enterprise JavaBeans because transactions are what EJBs did very well. So, hearing this from Ted I decided to read a book on fundamentals of transaction processing, so that I could understand EJBs better. Now that I've read all about TP principles, I pick Richard Monson-Haefel's book again, and all of a sudden EJBs start to make a lot more sense.
